Island Life Vippetangen

Project by Mateusz Pietryga

THE QUESTION OF AFFILIATION
Seemingly obvious or ”natural” affiliation of the territory sometimes need to be confronted in order to recognize its needs and hidden potential. Vippetangen is one of those particular examples where belonging needs to be questioned to provide suitable solutions. Multiple layers of its border condition consistently disconnect it from the flow of the city. The result is a territory of hidden island characteristics that strives to become part of the Oslo fjord archipelago.

LINEAR NARRATIVE
The Vippetangen area suffers from a lack of identity. The intervention fulfills the recognized need for recreational functions along the coast, in a narrative with the islands. The new functionality provides a condensed and city bound extension of the island program during the summer and working as a substitution during wintertime. The part of the project is to discuss the necessity of change in focus from tourism to civic-based developments of the water/land edge of the Oslo city.

THE ACT OF LIBERATION
The transformation towards an autonomous existence is already present with the silo as the strongest identity on site - breaking the city regulations of  height limits in front of the castle. An island within its borders allows you set yourself free in the creative process. Perceiving Vippetangen as an island opens up for a new liberated condition of urbanity and new commons. Using the recreational island program as a base, I propose an act of site liberation. This intervention aims at examining different constraints, borders, and juxtaposition of natural presence with artificial creation.
